Overview

In this module, you’ll explore what self-advocacy and self-determination mean and why they matter—especially for individuals with disabilities. You’ll learn how to support others in making choices, setting goals, solving problems, and speaking up for themselves. Through real-world examples and practical strategies, you’ll discover how to teach these skills, create opportunities to practice them, and provide the right supports to help every learner grow in confidence and independence.

  • Learners will be able to define self-advocacy and self-determination and explain the differences between the two concepts, including their importance in the lives of individuals with disabilities.
  • Learners will identify evidence-based strategies for teaching and supporting self-advocacy and self-determination skills, including choice-making, goal-setting, and problem-solving.
  • Learners will demonstrate understanding of how to implement direct instruction, real-world application, and individualized supports to foster self-determination in diverse learners.
