Every year on September 9th, International FASD Awareness Day is observed. Proclamations are issued in countries, states, provinces, and towns across the world. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is an umbrella term describing the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. These effects may include physical, mental, social, behavioral, and/or learning disabilities with possible lifelong implications. According to the American Medical Association, FASD is the leading known cause of mental retardation yet it is 100% preventable. The National Institute of Medicine states that alcohol causes more damage to a developing fetus than any other drug. OCALI has launched new information for educators and families on the prevention, intervention and treatment of FASD.
