AIM for Change: Using Special Interests in the Classroom

Join this online professional learning community for a FREE 3-session exploration of two OCALI Autism Internet Modules (AIM): Restricted Patterns of Behavior, Interests, and Activities and Using Special Interests in the Classroom. One of the primary characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is restricted and repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities. Individuals on the spectrum may display this characteristic through behaviors related to their special interests. These special interests can be a pathway to engagement and learning. Strategies and examples for incorporating strong interests into teaching will be shared through this opportunity. AIM Author Bobby Huffman will be leading this learning community.

Who should attend?

We welcome and encourage intervention specialists, classroom teachers, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, administrators, paraprofessionals, mental health professionals, social workers, families, and counselors.

Presenter: Bobby Huffman is an intervention and behavioral specialist for Jones Middle School in the Upper Arlington school district. Throughout his teaching career, Bobby has worked with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ages 18 months to 12 years old in both the school and home settings to increase learning opportunities. In addition, Bobby is a part-time research assistant for OCALI.

Earn Credit! Participants have the following options:

  • 3 contact hour certificate for attending the webinars
  • 3 hours for modules- Complete on your own and download the certificate
  • 6 hours Ohio-Approved through OCCRRA- will be required to email certificates and attend all 3 webinars. Register in OCCRRA ST10158600

Join us for a free, family-friendly online learning opportunity designed to support your child with autism. In the average time it takes to prepare and make dinner (about 45 minutes), explore OCALI’s free AIM resources, created to help families better understand autism and behavior in the home.

April 2: AIM for Change: Exploring Emotional Vulnerability and Visual Supports

In this family-friendly session, we'll explore how autistic individuals experience and express emotions differently, and how visuals can make feelings easier to recognize, communicate, and manage. Drawing from the Emotional Vulnerability AIM, you'll learn practical, meaningful ways to use visual tools to reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation, and strengthen connections with the people you love.

April 9: AIM for Change: The Power of Special Interests

Discover the power of special interests in supporting learning and connection at home! This family-friendly session will show how tapping into what your child loves can boost social skills, learning, and positive behavior. You’ll leave with simple, practical ideas for weaving special interests into everyday routines to make growth feel natural and fun. Information from the Using Special Interests in the Classroom AIM will be used.
