Navigating Behavior Pathways

Are you ready to transform the way your team empowers students with intensive support needs related to autism? Are you looking to equip your team with the knowledge and tools to help students navigate their behavior pathways and achieve their full potential? Join us for this essential FREE training on managing and supporting complex autism behaviors in the educational setting.

Understanding and addressing contextually inappropriate behaviors in students with autism is crucial for fostering an effective learning environment. Behavioral issues can range from disruptive and dangerous actions to more passive behaviors, such as withdrawal or inability to complete assignments. These challenges, whether active or passive, can significantly hinder a student's ability to participate in educational opportunities, interact socially, and achieve academic success.

This 2-day in-person comprehensive team-approach training is designed for educational teams in Ohio seeking to enhance their approach to supporting autistic students with contextually inappropriate behaviors. Working through a systematic assessment process, participants will gain the tools necessary to create supportive, individualized plans that address the full spectrum of behavioral needs across various age groups.

OCALI partners with Ohio’s State Support Teams (SST) and Educational Service Centers (ESC) to provide this training.

At the completion of this training, educational teams will be able to:

  • Utilize a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) process to determine appropriate support for students with complex needs, including those requiring PBIS Tier III support.
  • Assess the physical environment and intentionally design or modify it using strategies to support accessibility, engagement, and effective interaction.
  • Leverage student strengths to build a tailored Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) that supports academic, social, and emotional growth.
  • Identify underlying characteristics and skills that may influence student behavior and impact learning and participation across various environments.
  • Develop and implement behavior intervention plans (BIP) using evidence-based practices that focus on teaching students the critical skills necessary for success in the classroom and beyond.
  • Receive coaching and technical assistance from OCALI and SST/ESC consultants.

The team should consist of at least three members, including the teacher who will be directly responsible for implementing the plan. Recommended team members could include:

  • Intervention specialist
  • General education teacher (if applicable)
  • Support personnel (i.e., Speech & Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, Counselor)
  • Administrators
  • Building Principal
  • Paraprofessionals
  • Family members
