Catatonia: New Essential Consideration (Specifier)
When thinking about recognizing autism it is also helpful to think about recognizing another condition that often accompanies autism – catatonia. Catatonia has two opposing ways that it may impact behavior – immobility and agitation. Some of the characteristics of catatonia overlap with characteristics of autism. It is estimated that 12 to 20% of individuals on the spectrum experience symptoms of catatonia.
The DSM 5 TR - diagnostic manual lists specifiers for a professional to consider when diagnoses are made. Specifiers give additional information to strengthen the understanding of a client’s needs and guide treatment. Catatonia is included as a possible specifier for those who are diagnosed with autism. It is important for those who assess for autism to be vigilant in considering the possibility of catatonia.
