Preparing for an Evaluation

You may prepare for the evaluation by:

Your questions are important. Ask questions that will help you know what to expect. Of course, the assessor won’t be able to share exact questions or copyrighted materials with you, but they can share timeframes, number of sessions, the names and professions of the assessment team members, and a general description of the assessment process.

If you feel worried about any aspect of the process, share that with the professionals. This is an opportunity for them to know how to make the process more comfortable for you.

There are often movement, texture, lighting, sound, or other sensory factors that might need to be addressed for you to be able to feel comfortable during the assessment. Share that information. It is very likely that the assessor will be familiar with the type of needs that you share and will be well-prepared to adapt the setting. Professionals with experience with autistic clients will likely be comfortable with any strategies - such as adjusting the lights or taking intermittent breaks - that you may suggest.
