Resources for Children and Youth with Hearing Impairments, Visual Impairments, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder
Learn about resources for families of children and youth who are: Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Blind and Visually Impaired, Deafblind, Traumatic Brain Injury, and have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder. The first 4 of these disabilities are disability categories under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004) that are considered low incidence disabilities. That is, the number of individuals affected by these disabilities are very low, less than 1% of the total population of students. These students, however, present serious and specific challenges for the individuals themselves and for those responsible for their education. These students are low in number, but high in need. OCALI has an interest in helping educators and parents of these students find the resources they need to serve them well.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) is not a specific IDEA category, but it is another spectrum disorder like autism. FASD is an umbrella term describing the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. OCALI worked with Ohio's Statewide FASC Initiative to compile information for the FASD webpage.
