Steps to Diagnosis or Identification

The process of seeking an autism evaluation sometimes feels daunting to the family or individual. It is usually unfamiliar and sometimes intimidating. The possible outcomes of the assessment feel profound. There may be anticipation that is hopeful or fearful or both.

Regardless of the age of the individual or the setting of the evaluation, professionals in that setting are available to answer questions prior to the assessment process. There may also be families in the community who have recently completed the assessment process who could be a resource for information and support.

Sometimes knowing what to expect helps to alleviate anxiety about the upcoming experience and facilitates preparation.
