Diversity Defined
Diversity is Dynamic
Dr. Herman Horn from Texas State University states the definition quite simply:
"Diversity is the range of ways people differ'
(Horn, 2013)
Diversity represents all abilities, working together for one common goal: acceptance. Whether they are a part of a unique race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, physical ability, mental ability, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies, every person on planet Earth is unique and important and should be described in a unique and compassionate way. Understanding perspectives or each person's unique difference, is a significant part of understanding diversity.
Companies Understand Differences & Supporting Diversity
Many companies have recognized the importance of an inclusive workplace. By including unique perspectives and embracing thinking from employees, that fits all consumers, companies are closing the gaps that exist between many individuaIs. There is great value and breaking down a task to bare essential key steps and then looking for individuals that can complete task with a variety of accommodations. Companies are diversifying the hiring practices to hire individuals with the ability to do the work, yet may not have a college degree. These individuals possess the stamina and flexibility to learn skills through on-the-job training and are a valued addition to their work team.
Companies such as Walgreens and Microsoft are embracing differences and disabilities, and capitalizing on their employee's strengths and perspectives to break down barriers in their companies. These companies identify alternative solutions, give a positive spin to change and continue to build a new culture in their work environments. These companies serve as models and mentors for others, demonstrating the benefits of employee empowerment. Additional resources or networks assisting others as they work to move in a more inclusive direction include: Included. Supported. Empowered as well as, Work Without Limits, and APSE. All these networks engage employers, educate the local community, and highlight "all abilities' as being vital to the community. In addition, these and other forward thinking organizations collaborate with community partners to find needed employment opportunities to increase the rate of employment for individuals with disabilities.
