Age-Appropriate Transition Assessment Planning Guide

Case Study: Jessica

Jessica has several areas of interest. Firefighter, ER Nurse and Stunt Performer, but the Firefighter is her top choice. She has always been fascinated with firefighters and is seriously considering a career in firefighting. Her adult life employment goal is focused on a career in fire protection working as a firefighter and can envision herself actively fighting blazing house fires. Starting with just this one piece of information allows the team to discuss the skills and attributes needed for success in this career.

After researching information about requirements for firefighters, the team summarized the following skills and knowledge for consideration during the AATA process:

  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Practical skills in operating and using tools
  • Decision-making skills
  • Physical stamina and high level of physical fitness
  • Ability to respond quickly and remain calm
  • A high level of self-discipline
  • Ability to follow instructions and regulations
  • Initiative during rescue operations
  • Accuracy in writing incident reports
  • Use simple algebraic expressions to help determine the stability of buildings after they have been weighed down with water. The Fire Flow Formula determines how much water firefighters will require to suppress a fire.
  • At least a high school diploma as well as training(s) in emergency medical services or have obtained an emergency medical technician (EMT) basic certification

Review of firefighter skills and attributes, along with what the team already knew about Jessica's strengths, interests and needs, led the team to document the following questions related to her career development.

  • Is Jessica aware of the scope of skills needed to successfully engage in firefighting?
  • Is she aware of the need for accurate and clear written communication as part of the job?
  • Is she aware that regulating her emotions, making sound decisions and following directions was necessary for her safety and the safety of others?
  • Jessica appears to have a narrow focus on the role of the firefighter.
  • Why is she also interested in careers such as ER Nurse and Stunt Performer?

These thoughts and questions were noted in team discussions and became a critical aspect of Jessica's transition assessment. The team realized they needed additional information about Jessica before they were able to fully understand her career interests, advise her on her career development and support her to achieve success.
